City Developments Limited (CDL) demonstrated its commitment to workplace safety, health and well-being through a Gemba Walk at the Newport project on 10 September, led by CDL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Sherman Kwek, and members of the Executive Committee (ExCo). The walk brought together the Newport project team, Woh Hup Group, contractors, supervisors and workers.

With heat stress and haze management as key focuses, the session highlighted practical measures to help workers stay safe on site, including recognising the early signs of heat-related illness, staying hydrated, taking adequate rest and recovery breaks, monitoring weather and air quality, and adjusting work activities when necessary.

The Gemba Walk also highlighted a key principle of CDL’s safety culture – empowering workers to speak up and stop work when they identify an immediate danger. During the session, Mr Kwek presented safety awards to workers and supervisors who had used the Stop Card process to address unsafe conditions, as well as those who had demonstrated care for the safety and well-being of their fellow workers.

To promote good hydration habits, Mr Kwek and ExCo members also distributed collapsible water bottles to workers on site. The visit included an interactive safety quiz, encouraging participation and adding a lively touch to the session.

Through initiatives such as the Gemba Walk, CDL continues to foster a culture of visible leadership, sustained commitment, shared responsibility and genuine care for its workers. The Group remains committed to ensuring that everyone who comes to work returns home safe and well at the end of each day.
