Twenty-five years on, the world remembers 11 September 2001 as a day of profound loss, when nearly 3,000 lives were lost in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City.

For Hong Leong Group Singapore and Millennium Hotels and Resorts (MHR), the anniversary also carries a special connection through its hotel in Lower Manhattan.

Then known as the Millenium Hilton Hotel and located across from the World Trade Center, the property sustained significant damage in the attacks. Thanks to the swift response of the hotel’s management and staff, around 150 employees and 650 guests were evacuated safely, with no lives lost inside the hotel.

Following a US$32 million renovation, the hotel reopened in March 2003 with a grand ceremony and street parade, marking an important milestone in the recovery of Lower Manhattan. The occasion was attended by then New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New York State Governor George Pataki, alongside firefighters and union officials.

More than two decades later, the hotel entered another new chapter. Following an extensive renovation, it was officially launched as M Social Hotel New York Downtown in October 2025, marking a new phase for the property while continuing its longstanding presence in a neighbourhood shaped by remembrance, resilience and transformation.

As we mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we remember those who lost their lives, honour the courage of those who responded, and reflect on the enduring strength of New York City and its people.
