China Yuchai International Limited, one of the largest powertrain solution manufacturers through its main operating subsidiary in China, Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Company Limited (“Yuchai”), has introduced its first high-pressure, direct-injection internal combustion engine capable of operating entirely on ammonia and designed for heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
The development marks a significant breakthrough in Yuchai’s low- and zero-carbon power research initiatives across hydrogen-, methanol- and ammonia-based propulsion technologies. The milestone validates and operationalises key technologies, including the integration of a high-pressure ammonia-to-hydrogen generation system with the high-pressure direct injection of liquid ammonia ignited through a pre-chamber jet system.
Delivering thermal efficiency comparable to the highest-performing heavy-duty diesel engines, the technology offers a new zero-carbon power solution for heavy-duty, long-haul commercial vehicles. The innovation balances the advantages of lower total lifecycle costs with the need to reduce carbon emissions, supporting the transition from traditional internal combustion engines towards a more sustainable, zero-carbon future.
Mr Weng Ming Hoh, President of China Yuchai International Limited, said, “This breakthrough significantly expands our technology capabilities and strengthens the next-generation power solutions we can provide, unlocking meaningful potential for carbon reduction. Building on this momentum, Yuchai will continue to enhance its innovative R&D capabilities in ammonia-energy applications, reinforcing our commitment to supporting China’s ‘Dual Carbon’ strategic goals.”
