During the Q&A segment of a media and analyst briefing on CDL's Strategic Review Outcome, CDL's Group CEO Mr Sherman Kwek was asked what motivated him to keep working so hard despite the challenges and scrutiny of leading one of Singapore’s most prominent property groups.
Mr Kwek’s response offered a glimpse into the values, sense of responsibility and long-term purpose that grounds his leadership, reminding us that business transformation is ultimately driven by people and conviction, not just numbers.

I've always been driven by a desire to carry forward my family's legacy, particularly that of my grandfather, who had a deep and meaningful influence on me while I was growing up. You can see that reflected even in Republic Plaza.
When we undertook the asset enhancement initiative for the building, I created a space on the ground floor called the Founders Gallery, which tells the story of his life, how he built up the Hong Leong Group and, subsequently, CDL. It also highlights the principles, beliefs and values he embodied. That has been a key driving factor for me.
Career vs family: Growing older and changing priorities
At the same time, all of us are motivated, to some extent, by achievement. We want to accomplish something in our careers. Does our career define us? No, at least not anymore for me. When I was younger, I thought my career was everything and the be-all and end-all of life. But once you have a family and children, you realise there are other important aspects of life as well.
While I'm still not very good at achieving work-life balance, this journey remains deeply meaningful to me, particularly because of my grandfather's legacy. It is something I want to see through. Perhaps one day I will take your advice and consider early retirement. Unfortunately, I'm not quite there yet.
I also can't quite live up to the image you've painted. I'm not rolling in dough, flying on private jets or sailing on yachts. I don't lead that lifestyle, nor do I have the financial means to support it.
The people behind the purpose
Ultimately, it's about passion for what we do. It's about the mission we all share. I'm sure Eik Sheng feels the same way as a family member. Likewise, Mr Chia, Eik Sheng, Yim Ming and Gerald have all been with the Group for many years. I won't say exactly how many, or they'll accuse me of revealing their age.
We've all been part of the Group for a long time, and we care deeply and passionately about CDL. It has become like a second home to us, and many of our colleagues have become like family. We all want to see CDL succeed. We want to act in the best interests of all shareholders and ensure that we continue to maximise value and returns for everyone.
